Underground Cables

High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) cables and joints are often direct-buried at depths of 1.5 to 3 metres beneath roads and pavements. During road diversions or land redevelopment, excavation and earthworks in the vicinity can expose these assets to risks such as:

  • Ground vibration from heavy machinery

  • Soil settlement or cave-ins due to poor or unforeseen site control

  • Movement of cables and joints caused by shifting earth or debris piles

  • These direct and indirect impacts accelerate mechnical stress and ageing of cables and joints. Over time, such disturbances can initiate partial discharge (PD) activity, which is a leading indicator of insulation degradation and eventual failure.
